But I read that only VIA/NForce chipset works with BenQ.
If you use any other, you need to cut wires/solder.

I ran into a snag using this tutorial.. i'm hoping to god I didn't brick it!!
I used the ntfs4dos / benq method. Everything went good, I got through dBen fine, but when i got to the fBen part, i followed the instructions on the screen that told me to turn the xbox OFF, when in the tutorial it says i should have turned it ON. It says this is a bug in the program.
Anyway, it locked up at this point and I had to reboot. I did fBen again, and it went through successfully. However, after connecting it to the tv, it wouldn't run any games at this point (backups or originals). It gave me the error that I needed to insert an xbox 360 cd.
So, I went back and ran dBen again and it is acting weird.
When it first promps me to turn my Xbox on, i do that, and it skips right through the steps i went through before to where it does the
Reading bank 0... ok
Reading bank 1... ok
Reading Bank 2... ok
Reading Bank 3... ok
and then gives me a NO VALID KEY FOUND error.
So I have absolutely no idea what to do. I tried reinstalling iPrep and it keeps doing the same thing.
I'm using a SATA card, NFTS4DOS and a Benq drive.
Am I in trouble?

 Hi All,
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to flashing xbox 360 drives.
But I thought I'd give this tutorial as I found it difficult to find the right one for me.
As an Engineer by trade I thought it would be easy to flash my drive and found out after two days it wasn't.
So here goes for all you noobs who are having difficulty flashing your ms25/28 tosh/samsung drive, don't know it this is relevant for other drives ?
Firstly I was told to buy a via sata chipset card but I have no room for it in my comp so I decided to use my onboard SATA which was a mcp55 nvidia 590/570 chipset, I also had a sil chipset SATA but was told this didn't work.
Secondly I was told to use either iPrep or Xteme boot maker but also found out this didn't work even after many frustrating hours trying to hex edit mtkflash to recognize my chipset.
After many days of trying to flash my drive I just gave up as it was an impossible task without the necessary knowledge involved.
A few days later a friend of mine said did you try Dosflash and I said no?
he said it was so easy to use and didn't even have to create a boot disk for dos just run it straight in windows xp, Well this was a break so googled it and found it; downloaded it and tried and bang detected my drive from go.
So I grabbed my new 53 firmware and flashed my drive, sorted or so I thought, came up Please Insert This Disk Into An Xbox 360 Console, Shit what’s going on now? So I tried a different firmware Ixtreme 1.4 and the same thing happened Hmmm I said must be doing something wrong?
Didn’t know at the time you have to add your key to firmware first, so used firmtool to add my key and bingo my drive started to play my backup games.
OK you all say so here's what you need.
1) DosFlash (there are two types, one for a boot disk (DosFlash16)and one for winxp(DosFlash32))
2) For all you people who have flashed there drive before you need 0800 Disc (to bypass the firmware guard)
3) Firmtools v2.0 (to add your key to whatever firmware you decide to use)
4) Very IMPORTANT ADVICE Backup you firmware and keep it safe FIRST
Ok that is it, I hope this helps many people who have problems trying to flash there drives with no success.
Cheers.
Excalibre.
PS. if anyone needs more help or info just pm me and i'll be happy to help in any way i can.

I have been following this tutorial for a BenQ drive but could do with a little bit of advice before I continue (I'm a noob so bare with me...).
Neither the fBen or dBen commands will work (I get the 0xFF message) I can read the firmware from the drive using the 'cd tools' and 'dosflash' commands, but as I am not entering my serial, will this give me a proper backup? After this, I put the orig.bin in the tools folder with the iXtreme hacked firmware (BenQ-CFW.bin) and run firmtool ('firmtool orig.bin BenQ-CFW.bin'), which gives me a success message (drive key copied, drive serial copied). Do I now have the correct firmware to flash my drive? As the dBen command doesn't work, I intend to use dosflash manually, using it first to erase the firmware, then write the BenQ-CFW to the drive. Will this work or am I gonna brick my 360?
Just to reiterate, is it possible to proceed sucessfully considering that I haven't once typed in my serial from the back of the xbox?

hi there. this is my 1st attempt to flash an XBOX 360 and i'm stuck. I did follow the tutorial "step-by-step" (sound like an old NKOTB success Smile without success.
BTW my drive is a BENQ.
I bought myself a PCI / SATA adapter on ebay. chipset VIA6421 with 3 sata ports and 1 ide on it.
I download the whole full xbox360 directory/subdirectory (with a few retry caus the server disconnected me so many times ).
I installed Iprep, update my drivers for the sata card and use the latest version of the firmware to create a bootable USB flash drive.
I can boot it normaly, and when I enter the "dben <serial1 serial2> " it prompt me the little warning and ask me if I want to send command until my drive respond. (drive curently off). I say yes+<enter> and then turn on the drive.
the little hexa counter stay at 0xf7 I think (I'm not sure caus I can't surf and flash at the same time )
I suspect my SATA cart but since windows detect it, i can't say how to exclude this option.
please help me

Some small nitpicks/improvements:
On the iPrep preparation pages, you could just tell people to get Firmtool.exe from xbins like all the other apps; the version there is updated to 1.2 so you could save on some 360mods bandwidth
You could also add a reminder on the iPrep pages for Vista users to right-click their iPrep executable/shortcut, go to "Compatibility" and choose "run as administrator". Without this it throws up some exceptions on startup and can't update.
On page 108 line 4, it says "... use the ms25 version strings from your original firmware." Page 108 is in the ms28 part of the guide, might want to fix that copy/paste job to read "ms28 version strings".
Thank you very much for this incredibly comprehensive tutorial!
e: woops, this would probably be better placed in the other thread.

I used windows vistsa with Intel ICH9 chipset to setup a bootable USB flash drive. I can't update firmtool.exe to v1.2 because it doesn't have C:\Program Files\X-Projects\iPrep 101\Resources\Tools folder in my computer after I run iPrep 101 as administrator. I stuck in this step. You please help me out. Thanks.

Hello, thanks for the PDF tutorial, its very clear and well done!
I am stuck here , i followed all steps for my hitachi V47 and when i was flashing i got asked about the drive letter, then the speed and then the 4 numbers for the backup, then it started doing the thing , but its been 30 min now and the prog seems stuck in the 2/11 process.
how do i do to continue? do i restart? ( seems like that would be bad ) or just wait , i saw the video tutorial and it was all very quick so i wonder what went wrong
Can someone help here???
Regards

U have to download the firmtool.exe v1.2 AND then Replace it! Find where u installed the file.
ICH9 chipset will not work. I have tired. So i got the VIA 6421A card.
Thanks for the tutorial, Successfully flashed my xbox in one try. I followed the instructions VERY Carefully. Flashed my Benq with iPrep.
